After the first shoe sold out its initial fifty thousand pairs and passed one hundred and fifty million dollars in sales, Nike handed the line to Tinker Hatfield, who from the third model onward turned a signature sneaker into a design series with its own vocabulary. Cement print, the grey speckled pattern introduced on the Jordan 3, is the most recognisable code in that vocabulary, and Red Cement moves it out of grey and into a colourway where the speckle sits against a red that reads as heat rather than as team red. On the 4, with its winged eyelets and mesh netting, the print becomes an accent rather than a panel, which is exactly why this version feels tuned rather than loud.
