Lace it with a proper midfoot lock and leave thumb room at the toe, since feet swell over distance. Off duty it works with technical clothing: black running tights or nylon trousers with a light shell, or grey sweatpants and a hoodie where the cold palette keeps things sober. Do not machine wash it, since heat and agitation damage foam. Air dry away from radiators, rotate pairs if you run daily, and retire it when the midsole stops rebounding.

Running is where New Balance's authority is real rather than inherited. The Trackster spread through YMCA fitness programmes and college cross country teams at MIT, Tufts and Boston University in the 1960s, building the brand from the grassroots up, and its sponsorship of New York Road Runners keeps it embedded in the same community today. The brand's fashion life came later and mostly by accident, when the 990 family became the American dad shoe and normcore reclaimed its plainness. This is a road shoe, so cushioning and stability are the whole conversation. New Balance's Fresh Foam, introduced in 2014, is a proprietary EVA blend moulded as a single piece and tuned zonally so support and softness are placed exactly where the foot needs them, and the 1080 line is where that thinking is applied at its most cushioned. FuelCell is the separate performance foam, a nitrogen injected TPU and EVA blend built for rebound, so do not confuse the two. The three-tone colourway splits the engineered upper into readable zones. Width fittings matter more in a running shoe than anywhere else, because a poor fit becomes a blister at kilometre fifteen.
