Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 16 May 2023 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a suede upper in Sail/Photon Dust/Light Smoke Grey/Picante Red. The 85 in the name refers to the shape rather than the colour: a wider, heavier interpretation of the Dunk that returns the silhouette to how it looked when it was first issued, before decades of refinement slimmed it down. Athletic Department is the theme, and it is an honest one, because that is literally where this shoe came from. Nike was founded in Oregon by a university track coach, Bill Bowerman, and his former runner Phil Knight, and by 1980 it held about half the American athletic shoe market largely by supplying the school and college system. Style code FJ5429 133 puts this pair squarely in that campus register.
The wider 85 shape suits looser clothing. First recipe: baggy or straight leg denim with a slight stack over the shoe, plus a heavyweight sweatshirt, letting the chunkier profile anchor a relaxed fit. Second: grey wool trousers with a collegiate knit, playing the athletic department reference straight without turning it into fancy dress. Because the last is roomier than a standard Dunk, consider your usual size rather than going up, and half a size down if your foot is narrow. Good for daily wear and cold weather, less good for rain given the leather panels. Brush before dirt sets, condition the panels occasionally, and let the vintage finish age rather than trying to keep it new.
American sport at school and college level is the substrate under most of what Nike became. Bowerman coached at the University of Oregon and his best known athlete, Steve Prefontaine, became the company's first track endorser and its symbol of running as attitude rather than sport, with a statue at the Beaverton headquarters. The Dunk itself was built to be issued in team colours, so a shoe titled Athletic Department is not a costume reference, it is a return to the source. What changed is the audience: the same colour blocking that once identified a squad now signals a knowledge of Nike's own history to people who have never played a game.
The 85 build is a different shoe to wear than a standard Dunk. It is cut wider through the forefoot with a fuller, more rounded toe and heavier panelling, which gives a chunkier profile and a roomier fit; if you have a wide foot this is the more comfortable version of the silhouette, and if you have a narrow one you will notice the extra volume. The panelled upper carries the athletic department colour blocking as separate overlay pieces, and the vintage leaning finish means it is meant to look softened rather than crisp. Break in is quick because there is more room to begin with, and the wider toe box creases across a broader area rather than in a single sharp line.
