Released on 15 August 2023 and part of the Mexico 66 line. This release has a leather upper in Birch/Cactus Green. Vintage Birch Cactus Green takes the aged finish of the Vintage line and runs a dry, slightly grey desert green through the crossed Tiger Stripes and heel, over a Birch body that has been warmed down from white. Cactus is not a forest or a khaki green: it is dustier, the colour of a plant that survives on very little. On a silhouette that was built in 1966 for athletes bound for the 1968 Mexico City Games, and released two years early as a flagship to take on Adidas and Puma, that dry green reads like altitude and heat rather than like a track. This is the Mexico 66 doing landscape instead of sport.
Two recipes. First, ecru wide leg trousers with a cream tee and a green field jacket, letting the stripes tie the shoe to the outerwear across a warm neutral base. Second, faded black jeans with an oatmeal knit, where the dry green is the only colour in the fit. Cactus Green sits well against browns, creams and washed blacks and fights bright blues. Take your usual size in a narrow, slightly long last. Do not attempt to brighten the Birch, since that works against the vintage treatment. Brush dry, condition with a colourless cream, and let scuffs settle in rather than removing them.
The vintage strategy makes sense once you know the brand's timeline. Onitsuka merged with GTO and JELENK in 1977 to form Asics, the Tiger name went dormant for roughly twenty five years, and Asics brought it back in 2002 as a fashion label. Aged finishes sell that missing quarter century as a surface. Since the early 2020s the model has been a staple of sneaker culture again, carried by the move away from chunky sneakers toward slim, low profile silhouettes, and muted earth tones have done particularly well in that wave because they read as clothing colours rather than as sneaker colours.
Slim leather upper over a narrow last, low flat profile, thin cupsole and Tiger Stripes stitched as structural overlay panels across the quarter. The vintage finish softens the whole surface: the Birch is warmed rather than bright, and the sole edge is toned so nothing sits sharply new against anything else. Cactus Green is a matte, desaturated colour, which means it hides small marks far better than a saturated green would and ages into the treatment rather than against it. The toe box creases early and that is intended here. Underfoot the shoe is thin, flat and flexible, giving ground feel and low weight rather than cushioning.
