Culture Note™
Released on 12 December 2023 and part of Nike's Vomero 17 line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/Amber Brown/Bronzine. The Vomero has always been the comfort end of Nike's running range, the shoe for people who care more about how their legs feel at the end of a run than about what the clock says. That is a direct descendant of the company's founding argument: Bill Bowerman, coaching at the University of Oregon, believed runners deserved better than what the American market sold, which is why Blue Ribbon Sports started importing in 1964. The seventeenth version in Black with Bronzine is deliberately unshowy, a dark shoe with a warm metallic accent, made to disappear into early mornings. Running shoes at this end of the range are bought again and again rather than collected.
Two uses. One, training: easy days, long runs and recovery runs after harder sessions, with technical socks and a heel lock lacing pattern if your foot slides. Two, standing days: black joggers or dark denim, a plain tee, a shell, where the Bronzine accent stops the shoe looking purely functional. Size up about half from your dress shoe size and check for a thumbnail of toe room. Care for foam properly: rinse with cool water, never put them in a washing machine, take the insoles out to dry, and keep them out of direct sun, which stiffens midsoles faster than mileage does.
Nike's running credibility comes from a long roster of sponsored track athletes, including Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson, Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Allyson Felix, and from Steve Prefontaine before all of them as the first track endorser, whose statue stands at the company's headquarters and who framed running as attitude rather than as exercise. The daily trainer is where that inheritance meets ordinary life. Nobody watches your Tuesday morning ten kilometres, and Nike's long argument, from Bowerman's lighter soles to Just Do It, has been that it still counts. A plain black cushioned trainer is the most honest expression of that argument in the catalogue.
A high cushion neutral trainer is judged on three things: how much impact it absorbs, whether the midfoot holds you steady while it does that, and whether the upper stays comfortable when your foot swells. Nike's contribution to that last part runs through Dri-FIT, its moisture wicking fabric platform, and through Flywire, the cable based approach that holds the foot while the upper carries less material. Expect a soft, protective and slightly heavy ride rather than a responsive one. Black uppers with metallic detailing hide road grime and monsoon splash better than anything light, which makes this the practical choice for Indian city running.
