Origin
Part of On Running's Cloudmonster line. This release has a mesh upper in Undyed White/White. Undyed White is a colourway defined by something left out. The name says the dye step was skipped, so what you get is the material close to how it arrived, a slightly raw off white with none of the flatness a pigmented white has. Putting that on the original Cloudmonster, the model where On built its founding sensation tall, makes an interesting pair: the most engineered silhouette in the range finished in the least processed way. The engineering goes back to Zurich in 2010, where Olivier Bernhard, a former Swiss Ironman champion, glued sections of a cut garden hose to a sole to prove a hollow shape could land soft and push off firm. This is the women's build.
Utility
Natural white looks best against soft, unfussy clothing. Recipe one: oatmeal wide leg trousers, a white ribbed top and a linen overshirt, a full undyed palette where the shoe belongs to the outfit rather than punctuating it. Recipe two: black leggings and a heavy cream sweatshirt, using the tonal contrast to make the sole geometry pop. Use them for walking, easy road mileage, weekends and dry travel days, and keep them away from mud, monsoon streets and dark wet denim. Fit true to size, snug heel, generous forefoot. Waterproof spray before first wear, clean with foam and a soft brush, and never machine wash a structured midsole.
Influence
On grew out of endurance sport and only became a wardrobe brand later, after Roger Federer became a shareholder in November 2019 and The Roger launched as a limited edition in July 2020. The Cloudmonster is the model that benefited most, because its profile carries at a glance. On's cultural meaning today is design object: a Swiss engineered running shoe worn because it looks engineered. An undyed white version is the most design led way to buy it, closer to a material study than to a sneaker release, and it appeals to the same instinct that makes people like exposed concrete and raw wood.
Construction
Hexagonal CloudTec pods are what make a Cloudmonster behave: they load energy on impact and release it on take off, and that is a property of the cavity geometry rather than of the foam on its own. On engineers foam into those specialised shapes so compression happens horizontally as well as vertically, giving multi directional support so a tall sole stays controlled. An undyed finish makes every one of those shapes visible, which is the most flattering way to show structure and the least forgiving way to own it. Protect the upper before first wear, clean marks immediately, and expect the natural tone to warm slightly with age rather than staying paper white.
