Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 2 August 2022 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a patent leather upper in University Blue/White/Royal Blue. University blue and white is one of the most quoted colour pairings in basketball, and the reverse treatment flips which of the two is in charge. Instead of a white base carrying blue overlays, the blue takes the body and the white does the framing, which changes the shoe entirely from three metres away. This is the trick Nike has always played best on the Dunk Low: leave the pattern alone, move the colour, create a new shoe. The Swoosh, drawn by Carolyn Davidson and first used in June 1971, is the constant that makes the flip legible, since your eye finds the mark first and reads everything else around it.
First outfit: white wide leg jeans with a light blue shirt worn open over a white tank, letting the shoe close a full summer palette. Second: black leggings or slim black denim with an oversized white sweatshirt, where the blue becomes the single colour and the look stays sharp. Wear it for campus, brunch, travel days and anywhere you will be on your feet without needing formal shoes. Take your regular women's size; the Dunk Low fits close through the midfoot and true to length. Clean the white framing panels immediately when they mark, use a soft brush on the perforated toe, and keep them off wet ground.
Nike became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion from the 1980s onward, and college colour palettes are a direct import from American basketball into everyday dress. That is why a blue and white Dunk still reads as sport even on people who have never played: the codes travelled intact. By the 1990s and 2000s these shoes were part of casual and athleisure wardrobes rather than gym kit. The reverse version is a collector's detail, a signal to anybody who knows the original layout that you picked the harder one on purpose. That is most of the pleasure of owning it.
Leather panels in blue over a white base, or the other way round depending on where you look, with the panel edges doing the structural and the visual job at once. Underneath is the standard court arrangement Nike has refined since it began treating the outsole as engineering rather than decoration in Bowerman's waffle iron era: foam for daily cushioning, rubber for grip on smooth floors. The women's grading uses a narrower heel and a slightly different volume through the instep than the men's. Blue leather is more forgiving than white when it comes to creasing, but the white midsole and framing panels will yellow if you let them sit in sunlight.
