Origin
Part of the Jordan Courtside 23 line. This release has the Black/Gym Red colourway. Not every shoe in this house is a numbered signature model. After 1997, when Jordan Brand became a standalone division inside Nike with its own roster and apparel, the line needed shoes that carried the marks without carrying the archive, and the Courtside 23 is one of them. The name points at Jordan's number, which functions as a brand code in itself alongside the Chicago red, black and white. In all black, in grade school sizing, it is the most utilitarian expression of the label available: a lifestyle basketball shape stripped of colour, wearing the Jumpman as the only thing you need to read. It is the version of the brand bought for wearing every day rather than for keeping boxed.

This is a lifestyle silhouette rather than a court model, so the build is about a clean high cut shape and a broad, stable base rather than performance tooling. Black across the entire upper hides seams and lets the Jumpman, the silhouette of Jordan mid leap with legs split that Peter Moore had him recreate in Bulls gear, sit as the only detail with contrast. Grade school sizing means the same construction scaled down rather than a simplified version. Blackout uppers are the most forgiving finish in footwear for daily abuse, though glossy panels will show scuffs more than matte ones.
