Released on 30 June 2024 and part of Nike's Air Zoom Pegasus 41 line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/Anthracite/Black. Everything Nike knows about running started with a coach who thought American runners deserved better shoes. Bill Bowerman coached track at the University of Oregon, poured rubber into his wife's waffle iron to make a lighter outsole, and produced the tread that became the 1972 Moon Shoe and the 1974 Waffle Trainer. That obsession with weight and return underneath the foot led to Nike Air, the pressurised gas unit sealed in the midsole, and eventually to ZoomX foam and the carbon plated Vaporfly. The Air Zoom Pegasus 41 is the everyday end of that programme, the shoe for people logging ordinary miles, and Black Anthracite is its most anonymous, most practical dress.
Two uses. As a trainer: easy runs and long steady efforts, laced with a runner's loop through the top eyelet if your heel lifts, worn with a thin technical sock rather than cotton. As daily footwear: black on black works under dark tapered trousers or joggers for commuting and travel days, where the anthracite midsole keeps it from looking like gym kit. Size with a thumbnail of room at the toe, since feet swell over distance. Rotate with a second pair so the foam decompresses between runs, air dry after wet miles with the insoles pulled out, and never put a running shoe in a dryer.
Nike's running credibility is not marketing invention: Steve Prefontaine, Bowerman's pupil at Oregon, was the company's first track endorser and remains its symbol of running as attitude, with a statue at the Beaverton headquarters. Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Michael Johnson and Allyson Felix all ran in Nike. The Just Do It line, written by Dan Wieden in 1988 and launched with an eighty year old runner named Walt Stack, was aimed squarely at people running for themselves rather than for medals. A daily trainer in plain black is the most literal expression of that idea the company makes.
The name states the cushioning: Zoom Air, Nike's pressurised air unit, sits in the midsole to give return on toe off, with foam around it to handle repeated impact. The upper is an engineered mesh built to breathe and to hold without pressure points, following the same principle as Flywire, where the containment is structural so the material can stay thin. The outsole carries rubber only where a road runner actually wears through. Black Anthracite is a two tone dark scheme, black upper against a grey midsole and detailing, which hides road spray and midsole scuffs better than any light colourway. Expect a neutral, everyday ride rather than a racing one.
