Culture Note™
Designed by Bruce Kilgore and released on 24 June 2025 as part of Nike's Air Force 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Soft Yellow/Soft Yellow. Nike's signature basketball business began in 1984 with the Michael Jordan signing, which turned into a product line and then into an entire company within the company, and the model has been repeated for decades with LeBron James, Kevin Durant and others. The Kobe line belongs to that programme, and this release brings its Mamba Mentality identity onto the Air Force 1 Low, which is not a signature shoe at all but the most worn silhouette Nike makes. The Protro designation marks a performance retro, a returning shoe rebuilt with current materials rather than reissued as it was. It is a signature identity meeting a street classic.
Two ways. Classic and heavy: dark denim with a slight stack, a plain hoodie and a bomber, letting the AF1 shape do what it has always done. Sport referencing: black or grey warm up trousers and a plain crewneck, so the signature branding reads as intentional rather than accidental. This is an all day walking shoe rather than a performance one, so treat the Protro label as a materials upgrade, not an invitation to play in them. AF1s run large, so half down. Clean the leather with mild soap, use a dedicated sole cleaner on the midsole, condition occasionally, and keep the toe box stuffed to limit creasing.
The Air Force 1 became a staple of mainstream American youth dress from the 1980s onward, part of the same movement that made Air Jordans and Air Max models fixtures of urban and hip hop fashion, and it did that without a single signature athlete attached to it. Putting a basketball signature identity onto that shoe is Nike merging its two sources of authority: the sport, where it has been the official on court uniform supplier to the NBA, WNBA and NBA G League since 2017, and the street, where the AF1 has never left.
The Air Force 1 Low architecture underneath is unchanged in outline: a perforated toe box, stacked leather panels with the Swoosh as the divider, a padded collar and a thick rubber cupsole with a pivot circle, hiding a Nike Air unit in the midsole, the same pressurised cushioning principle the company has used since the 1987 Air Max. A Protro build means the materials and internal construction are updated rather than reproduced, so expect better leather and cleaner finishing than a general release, with the signature line's branding replacing the standard heel and tongue marks. Everything else behaves like an AF1: heavy, flat, durable, and very comfortable standing up.
