Culture Note™
Released on 2 January 2019 and part of the Mercurial Superfly 6 line. This release has the Black/Metallic Vivid Gold colourway. Football is where Nike learned to sell speed as a personality. The Mercurial line has always been built for players whose value is measured in acceleration, and the Superfly is its high collared, top tier expression, with FG marking it as a firm ground boot for natural grass. Black with Gold is the colourway football understands instinctively: a blacked out boot with metallic detailing, the visual shorthand for a player who wants to be noticed by what he does rather than what he wears. Nike's football authority was earned through advertising as much as engineering, and this is the boot equivalent of a highlight reel.
Firm ground boots are for natural grass, not artificial turf and not hard packed dirt, both of which will wreck the studs and your knees. Wear with football socks and shin guards, and lace so the collar sits without pinching the ankle. Fit should be snug with the toes close to the end, since a loose boot costs you touch, so most players take a half size down from their trainer size. Off pitch these are display only. Clean immediately after matches: knock mud off while wet, brush the plate and stud bases, wipe the upper with a damp cloth, stuff with paper and dry away from direct heat so the soleplate does not deform.
Nike's football advertising has produced some of its most replayed work, including the 2005 Touch of Gold film in which Ronaldinho appeared, a piece of marketing that did as much for the brand's football credibility as any sponsorship. That approach began with Wieden and Kennedy, Nike's agency partner from 1976, whose Dan Wieden wrote Just Do It in 1988, later named one of the top five ad slogans of the twentieth century by Advertising Age. Football is also the sport where Nike's ownership strategy showed: it bought Umbro in 2007 and sold it in 2012, choosing to build its own football identity rather than acquire one. A black and gold Mercurial is that identity in equipment form.
A firm ground boot built around lockdown and stud plate performance. The upper is a thin synthetic and knit construction shaped to sit close to the foot for ball contact, with a collar that extends above the ankle, which is what separates the Superfly from the lower cut Mercurial Vapor. Nike's Flywire principle, using cables to hold the foot with minimal upper material, is the clearest statement of the company's approach to this problem. Underneath, the FG soleplate carries moulded studs designed for natural grass, and it is the component doing the traction and energy transfer work. Black across the upper with Gold on the Swoosh and plate detailing keeps the shape clean at speed.
