Culture Note™
Designed by Eric Avar and released on 26 January 2017 as part of Nike's Air Foamposite line. This release has a foamposite upper in Dark Neon Royal/Black-White. The Foamposite One is the most extreme piece of manufacturing Nike ever sent to retail, a basketball shoe whose upper is a single moulded shell instead of stitched leather panels, and Royal is the colourway that made it famous. The XX designation marks an anniversary build of that shape. Nike had built its identity on engineering people could see, from the waffle sole Bill Bowerman poured in his wife's waffle iron to Nike Air made visible in the 1987 Air Max, and the Foamposite pushed that logic to its endpoint: a shoe that looks manufactured rather than assembled, and never pretends otherwise.
Two ways to wear it. Black or navy tapered sweatpants with a plain crewneck, letting the shell's finish do everything, which is how this shoe has been worn since it arrived. Or summer it: mesh shorts and a plain tee, the version that shows the whole silhouette. It is a bad long walking shoe and a worse wet weather one, since the shell has no give and gets slick. Size true and consider the width honestly before buying. Wipe the shell with a damp cloth rather than any brush, keep it out of prolonged sun, and store upright so the internal bootie does not collapse.
Nike shoes became status symbols in urban and hip hop fashion from the 1980s, with Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models entering mainstream American youth dress, and the Foamposite arrived as the technical extreme of that culture: expensive, alien and instantly recognisable across a court or a street. Nike remains the official on court uniform supplier to the NBA, WNBA and G League under a relationship running since 2017 and extended for a further twelve years, and this silhouette still reads as pure basketball hardware rather than lifestyle footwear.
A moulded composite shell forms the upper, giving a seamless outer surface with no panel seams to crease, wrapped around an internal bootie for fit. Underneath sits a foam midsole with Nike Air sealed inside for impact protection and a rubber outsole built for hardwood traction. The royal blue shell carries a deep, almost liquid finish that changes with the light, which is the single reason this colourway outlived every other. Because the shell does not stretch, the fit you get on day one is the fit you keep, and wide feet should size carefully. It is heavy, warm and rigid, and it holds shape better than any leather shoe in the archive.
