Designed by Peter Moore and released on 16 June 2023 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a suede upper in Sequoia/Safety Orange/Desert Berry/Alabaster. Rainbow Trout belongs to a strain of Dunk that treats the shoe as illustration rather than footwear. The name promises the markings of a fish, mottled colour, speckles, a shifting iridescent band, and the Dunk Low is the silhouette Nike hands over when it wants to try that kind of thing, because the panelling breaks an upper into shapes a designer can treat separately. It is a long way from Eugene, Oregon in 1964, when Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight were selling imported Japanese running shoes out of a car boot at track meets because they thought American runners deserved lighter shoes. The company that grew from that now sells shoes as objects to look at, and this is one of them.
Two fits. First, let the shoe carry the graphic: dark indigo jeans or black trousers, a plain heavy tee, an olive or grey jacket, nothing else patterned. Second, pull one tone out: a green knit or cap matched to the base of the upper, cream trousers, so the shoe looks composed rather than random. Best for dry weather, weekends and casual days when you want a conversation starter at ground level. Dunks fit true with a narrowish forefoot, so wide feet should go up half. Brush textured panels dry before any wet cleaning, use a mild sneaker cleaner rather than solvent so the speckling does not lift, and avoid direct sun which will flatten the colour.
The Dunk became culturally important because Nike itself did. The Michael Jordan signing in 1984 and the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon advertising made the brand the shoe of basketball and, through it, of hip hop, and from that decade its models turned into status markers in street fashion. The Dunk arrived at that party as the cheap, plentiful, infinitely recolourable option, and that is exactly why it became the collector's silhouette: it can be anything. Nature themed and animal themed colourways are the current expression of that freedom, shoes bought for the story in the name as much as for the shape underneath.
Style code FN7523 300 places it in Nike's green family, which fits the trout reading: greenish base tones with speckled and contrasting overlays across the panels. The Dunk Low is built as a set of stitched panels over a cupsole with a padded collar and a full length Swoosh that holds the midfoot together, so a graphic release like this one uses those panel divisions to carry different materials and finishes. Textured or speckled surfaces are harder to clean than flat leather because dirt settles into the grain, so a brush matters more than a cloth here. There is no visible Air unit on a Dunk, so the ride stays low and firm underfoot.
