    Culture Note™

Released on 23 November 2020 and part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has the Rattan/Parachute Beige/Orange Chalk/Baroque Brown colourway. Nike SB collaborations with the Boston retailer Concepts have a house style: pick an unlikely theme, commit to it completely and let the joke live in the details. Turdunken takes that approach onto the Dunk High, where the extra collar height gives a layered concept more surface to work with. The reference is culinary and absurd, which is entirely in keeping with a line whose audience punishes anything that tries too hard to be cool. Nike's own route into board sports was partly bought rather than built, having acquired the surf brand Hurley International in 2002, and the SB imprint has spent the years since proving it belongs through the shops it works with rather than the budget behind it.
Recipe one: baggy carpenter jeans stacked over the collar, a plain hoodie and a beanie, the standard skate silhouette that lets the layered panels appear in glimpses. Recipe two: black straight trousers cuffed just above the collar with a heavy knit, which shows the whole shoe and treats it as the centrepiece. Keep everything else plain, since a multi material upper is already busy. Highs need the hem clear of the ankle to look right. Skating in these will destroy the softest panels first, so decide upfront whether this is a wear pair or a keep pair. Brush dry, spot clean, and never machine wash mixed material uppers.
Nike's presence in skating was never guaranteed. The company bought its way toward board sports culture with the Hurley International acquisition in 2002 and had to earn the rest, including after Nike SB used Minor Threat's album art on a 2005 tour flyer, drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye, apologised on 27 June 2005 and settled out of court. Working through independent skate shops rather than around them is the lesson that stuck. A retailer led Dunk High with an in joke for a name is that relationship functioning properly, where the concept comes from a store with standing and the shoe carries both names without pretending otherwise.
Layering is the design logic of a shoe built around a stacked concept, so expect multiple materials across the upper, changes in finish between panels and detailing that only makes sense once you look closely. The Dunk High supplies the canvas: an ankle wrapping padded collar, an extended eyestay and a stiffer overall structure than the low. SB specification adds a thicker tongue, a plusher collar and an impact absorbing insole, the changes that separate a skate Dunk from a standard one. Underfoot is a foam midsole with no visible air unit and a rubber outsole with a pivot circle, so boardfeel stays flat and direct. Multi material uppers wear unevenly, and the softest panels go first.
