Origin
Released on 2 January 2025 and part of Nike's Zoom Fly 6 line. This release has a mesh upper in Light Bone/Cave Stone/Blue Void/Burgundy Crush. Nike's modern running programme is defined by one project. In 2017 it launched the Vaporfly, pairing ZoomX, an altered Pebax foam that is the lightest and most responsive in the range, with a full length carbon fibre plate designed to generate extra spring in every step. Peer research found it could improve marathon times by up to 4.2 percent, and World Athletics responded with rules on 31 January 2020 capping sole thickness at 40mm, allowing one rigid plate and requiring general retail availability. The Zoom Fly line sits alongside that racing programme as the shoe you train in. Cave Stone with Blue Void takes the Premium version into muted earth and deep blue rather than race day neon.
Utility
Two uses. Training: tempo runs and race pace work, where the propulsive midsole gives back what you put in, worn with thin technical socks and laced snug through the midfoot so the foot does not slide on a tall stack. Everyday: the stone and navy palette means it passes under dark joggers or tapered trousers on travel days without looking like race kit. Not the shoe for gym lifting or lateral sport. Size with a thumbnail of toe room. Rotate with a flatter trainer, air dry with insoles removed, and never machine wash, since heat and agitation degrade responsive foam faster than mileage does.
Influence
Running is where Nike's credibility was earned first, through Bill Bowerman at Oregon and Steve Prefontaine as its first track endorser, whose statue stands at the Beaverton headquarters. Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson, Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Allyson Felix all competed in the Swoosh. The plated era changed the sport's conversation entirely, moving the argument from training to equipment, and it is worth being accurate about it: the Vaporfly was never banned, and compliant models remain legal under the rules set in 2020. A premium trainer in muted colours is that technology settling into ordinary use.
Construction
The Fly name places this within Nike's Zoom family, built around a tall, propulsive midsole rather than a traditional flat trainer profile, with an engineered upper designed to hold the foot on top of a stack that high. The Premium designation points to upgraded upper materials and finishing rather than to a changed ride. Cave Stone is a soft grey brown that plays against Blue Void, a near navy, so the shoe looks considered rather than clinical, and the darker tones hide road spray on long runs. Rubber is placed on the outsole where a runner's stride wears through. Expect a firm, forward rolling feel that rewards pace.
