Released on 24 January 2022 and part of the Mexico 66 line. This release has a leather upper in Gold/White. Gold on White is the Mexico 66 dressed for a room rather than a street. The base shape is unchanged from 1966, when Onitsuka built the Mexico line as its flagship to take on Adidas and Puma ahead of the 1968 Mexico City Games, and it remains a slim toed, low profile flat with the crossed Tiger Stripes across the quarter. Here those stripes come in a metallic gold against a white body, which converts the brand's structural graphic into something closer to jewellery. It is a long way from a stadium shoe, and it only makes sense because the label was rebuilt in 2002 to sell fashion rather than sport.
Two recipes. First, cream tailored trousers with a white shirt and gold toned jewellery, where the stripes read as deliberate metal rather than a novelty. Second, black slim trousers with a black knit, using the gold as the single bright element in an otherwise flat evening fit. This is a going out colourway and it does not want rain or long walks on grit. Take your usual size in the narrow last. Keep the gold panels away from abrasive cleaners and brushes entirely, wipe them with a soft dry cloth, and clean the white body separately with mild soap and a soft brush.
Metallic executions are the clearest evidence of where this brand now sits. Onitsuka Tiger is a fashion label, revived by Asics in 2002 after roughly twenty five years dormant, and it should not be read as a performance running brand: performance stays with Asics, and Asics Tiger and Asics Sportstyle are separate lines again. In India the brand is deliberately sold as premium fashion, through exclusive outlets carrying footwear, apparel and accessories, starting at Palladium mall in Lower Parel, Mumbai. Gold and white is a colourway made for that shelf, aimed at a buyer choosing between this and a designer sneaker rather than between this and a trainer.
Slim upper on a narrow last, thin cupsole, low flat profile and the Tiger Stripes as stitched overlay panels holding the quarter together. The gold here is a metallic surface finish, which behaves differently from dyed leather: it scuffs rather than stains, and once the finish is abraded it does not clean back, so the stripe panels are the part to protect. The white body carries the rest and shows dust at the toe and along the sole edge. There is no cushioning of consequence and no arch structure, so the wearing case is flexibility and a low, clean line under trousers rather than comfort technology.
