The adidas Samba started as a problem-solving shoe. Adi Dassler built it in 1949 so footballers could train on icy, hard ground, giving it a suction-pattern outsole, the three stripes and a foldable tongue stamped with the gold trefoil. The first version was a mid-top on kangaroo leather sitting on a gum sole. adidas named it Samba after the Brazilian dance and music genre ahead of the World Cup in Brazil, and it has stayed in production more or less ever since, over 35 million pairs deep and second only to the Stan Smith across the entire adidas catalogue. Black, white and gum is the execution that reads as the default Samba: black upper, white Three Stripes, gum sole. Nothing here was redesigned for fashion, which is precisely why it works.
Two ways to wear the adidas Samba OG Black White Gum. First, the fail-safe: straight or slightly wide raw denim cropped just above the gum sole, a white tee, a black bomber, so the white stripes echo the tee. Second, dress it up, because a flat black leather shoe handles tailoring better than any chunky sneaker: pleated grey trousers, an oxford shirt, sleeves rolled. It is built for daily wear, travel and nights out, less so for standing all day given the thin sole. Grace Wales Bonner's collaborations pushed it into the luxury conversation, and Gucci, Disney and Pharrell's Humanrace line all took their turn on it. It has been spotted on Bella Hadid in low-rise straight-leg jeans in New York, on Kendall Jenner with jersey shorts and an oversized shirt, on Hailey Bieber with denim shorts in LA, and Kate Moss was wearing them long before the current wave. Black White Gum is the pair that outlasted the hype cycle because it never depended on it. When the trend cools, this is the colorway people keep reaching for.
The Samba OG keeps the parts that made it a football shoe. A leather upper with suede at the toe takes creasing without falling apart, and the T-toe is the detail people recognise from across a room. The gum rubber outsole is soft and tacky, built for grip on hard indoor floors, which translates to sure footing on wet tile and polished marble. Leather lining sits inside rather than synthetic mesh, so the shoe moulds to your foot across a few weeks instead of staying stiff. The Three Stripes run white against the black upper, the printed Trefoil sits on the tongue, gold branding runs along the heel. It is a flat, low-profile build, so expect ground feel and a clean line under trousers rather than cushioning.
