Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 12 September 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 4 line. This release has a suede upper in Cacao Wow/Geode Teal/Ale Brown/Twine/Sail/Luminous Green. This is the 4 in preschool sizing, dressed in Cacao Wow, a deep warm brown that pulls the model out of its usual red and black registers and into something closer to earth. The 4 belongs to the Tinker Hatfield era, the stretch that began with the third model and turned a basketball shoe into a design series with a language of its own rather than a yearly update. Hatfield took over after Peter Moore and Bruce Kilgore had built the first shoe and proved the concept, when Nike realised the initial 50,000 pairs selling out was not a fluke. A toddler size in a brown colourway is the least precious way to own that history.
Recipe one: cream or oatmeal joggers, a rust coloured crew sweat, and the brown reads as a full warm outfit rather than an accessory, which photographs beautifully and hides food. Recipe two: dark denim dungarees over a white long sleeve, where the brown grounds the blue and stops the outfit looking like a uniform. Buy with a thumb width of growing room, no more, since too much space makes a kid trip on a caged midfoot silhouette. Check fit every couple of months at this age. Brush dry mud off rather than washing wet, spot clean with mild soap, and keep them away from radiators, which crack and shrink the materials.
The number 23 and the Chicago red, black and white palette function as brand colours in themselves, so a brown 4 is a deliberate step outside the house signal, which is exactly what earth tone colourways have been doing across the line for years. The 4's cultural weight comes partly from collaboration: Travis Scott's Cactus Jack work with the brand covered the Air Jordan 1, 4 and 6, which put this specific silhouette at the centre of the modern hype economy. PS is preschool sizing, which means a smaller last, a softer build and usually an easier entry system than the adult version, because a child needs to get into the shoe without help. The 4's silhouette is built around a visible midfoot cage that the laces run through, which is what gives the model its distinctive front profile and, on a kids pair, what stops the foot moving inside the shoe. Cacao Wow is a forgiving colour for this age group: brown swallows scuffs, mud and playground dust in a way that white and red never will. Check the cage attachment points after heavy wear, since that is where lateral load concentrates on this silhouette.
