Culture Note™
Designed by Tinker Hatfield and part of Nike's Air Max 90 line. This release has a ripstop upper in Black/Buff Gold/Anthracite. Black with buff gold is the Air Max 90 dressed for evening. The 90 is the model that took the visible Air idea and made it architectural, with the sole unit framed by panel lines and the famous mudguard shaping that turned a running shoe into a graphic. Nike Air itself is a pressurised gas unit sealed in the midsole, and from the 1987 Air Max onward the brand made the cushioning visible, which changed what a sole was allowed to look like. Running it in near total black with a warm metallic gold accent removes the model's usual colour blocking argument and leaves only the shape, which is the strongest test a silhouette can be put through.
A blacked out shoe with a metallic accent is a night time tool. Wear it with black jeans and a black overshirt for a tonal fit where the gold is the only warmth, or break it up with charcoal trousers and a camel knit so the accent has something to answer to. Occasion is evenings, going out and cold weather daily wear rather than running. Air Max 90s fit true to length with a slightly snug forefoot, so keep your usual Nike size. Dry brush regularly to keep dust off the black, use a damp cloth on the sole unit, and avoid harsh cleaners near the gold detailing which will dull the finish.
Air Max is the family that moved Nike engineering into everyday dress. The line launched in 1987 with visible Air and, from the 1980s onward, Air Max models joined Air Force 1s and Air Jordans as staples of mainstream American youth wardrobes before running through 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks. The 90 in particular has spent decades as a default city shoe on both sides of the Atlantic. Nike's voice around all of it came from Just Do It, written by Dan Wieden in 1988 and first aired with 80 year old runner Walt Stack, a line that worked because it never asked you to be an athlete first.
The Air Max 90's build is layered panels over mesh with a prominent midsole and the visible Air window at the heel, the element that made this family famous. Blacked out, those panels stop competing for attention and the construction reads as texture: you notice the change in surface between sections rather than the change in colour. The buff gold lands as accent detailing and picks up light rather than shouting. Underfoot expect classic Air Max feel, cushioned at the heel and firmer through the forefoot, with real weight to the shoe. All black hides scuffing well but shows dust, so a regular dry brush does more for this pair than deep cleaning.
