Designed by Peter Moore and released on 13 July 2023 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in White/Picante Red. The Swoosh was drawn by Carolyn Davidson, a graphic design student, first used on 18 June 1971 and registered as a trademark on 22 January 1974. On a Dunk Low Retro in white with Picante Red, that mark is doing almost all of the design work, because the shoe is a white base with a single warm red as the accent and the Swoosh is where the two meet. Picante is a hotter, spicier red than a team colour, closer to chilli than to fire engine, and it changes the temperature of the whole shoe. Retro in the name signals the standard reissue build rather than a themed execution, which is the right way to buy a colourway this clean.
Warm red against white is the most flexible loud colourway in the Dunk range. Recipe one: mid blue straight leg jeans with a white tee and a tan suede jacket, an outfit where the red picks up the warmth of the leather rather than fighting it. Recipe two: cream trousers and an off white knit, a soft tonal build where the red is the only sharp edge. Avoid pink and orange, which sit too close to Picante. It works day to evening and reads clean with smart casual. Take your usual Dunk Low size. Spray before first wear, clean white panels with foam and a soft brush, and keep the red away from long soaking so the dye does not creep onto the white.
The Dunk Low's power is that a two colour arrangement is enough to make a release, which only happens once a silhouette is so fixed that colour becomes language. That took decades and it happened alongside Air Force 1s, Air Jordans and Air Max models becoming staples of mainstream American youth dress from the 1980s onward and then flowing into 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks. Nike learned to trade on recognition rather than novelty, the same way Just Do It, written by Dan Wieden in 1988, works without mentioning a product. A white and red Dunk sells on the outline alone.
White and red is the oldest trick on the Dunk Low, and it works because the panel blocking gives the red a clear shape rather than scattering it. Picante Red is warm and slightly muted, which stops the pair from looking like sports kit and lets it sit alongside browns and creams that a bright red would fight. The white base is the maintenance problem: toe box scuffs, midsole sidewalls and lace stains all show fast. Underneath is the standard Dunk Low platform with a broad flat forefoot and a rubber tread carrying the grip first logic Bowerman started with his waffle iron. Break in takes about a week, mostly at the collar and the flex point.
