Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 4 May 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 4 line. This release has a leather upper in Off White/Military Blue/Neutral Grey. Military Blue is one of the Air Jordan 4 colourways people can name without prompting, a cool grey and navy arrangement that has been reissued often enough to become part of the model's identity rather than a variation on it. The 4 belongs to the run Tinker Hatfield took over from the Air Jordan III onward, when Nike stopped making a signature shoe and started making a design series. In preschool sizing, this 2024 retro is a first pair rather than a collector's one, which changes what matters about it: the palette is calm, the contrast is low, and nothing about it demands to be kept in a box.
Grey and navy is the easiest palette a child's shoe can have, which is the practical argument for it. Navy joggers with a white or grey top keeps everything tonal, and denim with a red or yellow top gives the outfit a lift without fighting the shoe. Both survive a full day outside. Check preschool fit every couple of months, since feet at this age outgrow shoes long before the shoes wear out. Jordan Brand became a standalone Nike division in 1997 and by 2022 generated about 5.1 billion dollars for Nike, with a reported 150 to 256 million dollars going back to Michael Jordan under the royalty deal he signed in 1984. Reissuing a heritage colourway in preschool sizes is how a brand of that size reproduces itself: the palette is inherited before the history is, and the history arrives later.
The 4 comes after Nike Air cushioning entered the line with the Air Jordan II, so there is a real air unit underfoot rather than the flat foam of the original 1. The model's character comes from its layered panel structure and visible hardware, which survives the reduction to preschool scale better than a minimal shoe would. Preschool builds usually simplify the closure so a child can manage it alone, and that is the right trade. The grey base is more practical than a white one for this age of wearer, since it takes playground dust without immediately looking ruined, while the navy panels hide scuffing almost entirely.
