Designed by Charlotte Lee and part of New Balance's 1906L line. This release has a leather upper in Red/Black. The 1906 line comes out of the era when New Balance numbered its runners by ambition, and the 1906L is what happens when that platform is taken into leather instead of mesh. Red Croc is the loudest way to do it. A croc embossed finish and a saturated red pull the shoe out of the brand's grey comfort zone entirely, which is the joke and the appeal: New Balance spent a century being the sensible option, so a reptile textured red version reads as a deliberate provocation rather than a fashion default. It works because the underlying shape is not fashion at all. The 1906 silhouette is a running shoe drawn by a company that has sold fit and width since it was making arch supports in 1906.
Utility
Give it a dark, quiet outfit and let the shoe do all the talking: black or deep indigo straight leg denim, a black crew or a leather blouson, no other colour anywhere. The second recipe is tonal, a burgundy or oxblood trouser with a cream shirt, which turns the red from a shock into a considered pull. This is an evening and city shoe rather than a daytime workhorse. Wipe the embossed leather with a barely damp cloth and work along the grain, because dust settles in the stamped valleys and dulls the red faster than it dulls a smooth finish. Condition lightly once a season, keep it off wet streets, and use a shoe tree or paper to hold the toe box.
Influence
New Balance's collaboration and design programme has always leaned on independents and designers instead of mass celebrity, from Paul Smith on a 576 in June 2018 to Action Bronson across several models. That is the culture a red croc 1906L belongs to: the archive treated as a fashion line, a treatment applied to a technical shape for the pleasure of the contrast. The brand's plainness became a design position in the 2010s, and once plainness is the baseline, the interesting move is to break it hard. Appointing Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis as creative director of Made in USA in April 2021 confirmed that New Balance now reads its own runners as material for styling rather than only for running.
Construction
The upper is croc embossed leather in red, a stamped grain that catches light along the panel edges and gives the silhouette a hard, polished surface where the mesh version has a soft one. Leather changes how the shoe ages, creasing across the toe box rather than fraying, and it holds shape better through the midfoot. New Balance runs ABZORB under this platform, the proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend built to disperse heel strike impact before it reaches the knees and hips, so the ride stays plush rather than rigid. Expect a break in period the mesh builds do not have. Buy the width fitting that matches your foot, because leather will stretch a little across the ball but will not add volume you did not start with.
