Culture Note™
Part of the Calm Slide line. This release has a eva upper in Khaki/Khaki. Nike's founding problem was a runner's foot: Bill Bowerman wanted lighter shoes because he was watching what the heavy ones did to his athletes at Oregon, and the company that grew out of that has always paid attention to what happens after the session as much as during it. The slide is the least glamorous product in the catalogue and one of the most used, the thing an athlete puts on walking out of a locker room. The Calm Slide is Nike's soft, one piece take on that object, and khaki is the correct colour for it: neutral, warm and closer to a sandal you would wear to lunch than to anything with a team crest on it.
Use one: straight out of the gym or off a run, over socks, with joggers, where the soft footbed is genuinely a recovery tool rather than a style choice. Use two: at home and on short errands with shorts or loose linen trousers, where khaki reads as a sandal instead of as sports equipment. Do not wear it for long walking days, since a slide gives you no heel retention and your toes end up gripping. Rinse under a tap and air dry, which is all it will ever need. Keep it out of prolonged direct sun, because soft foam bodies harden and yellow with heat exposure over time.
Recovery footwear became visible because athletes became visible off the field, and Nike has spent five decades building that off duty image, from Steve Prefontaine as the first track endorser through to modern signature athletes like LeBron James and Kevin Durant. The tunnel walk, the training ground arrival and the post match press conference turned athlete leisure kit into a category, and the slide is its most democratic item. It costs little, needs no sizing expertise and carries the Swoosh, a mark first used in June 1971 and registered in January 1974, at a size everyone can read. This is the most accessible way to wear a symbol that Nike spent decades making universal.
This is a single moulded piece rather than an assembled shoe, which changes everything about how it behaves. There are no seams to rub, no lining to wet out and nothing to break in, so it fits from the first minute or it never will. The soft foam body compresses under the arch and rebounds slowly, which is why a recovery slide feels different from a beach flip flop. A one piece build is also the easiest thing in the world to clean, since water is not going to reach a lining that does not exist. Khaki is a forgiving tone here, warmer than grey and much less obviously marked than black or white.
