Designed by Peter Moore and released on 8 June 2021 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Dark Chocolate/Copa/Pink Foam. Free 99 is a joke about price wearing a Dunk Low, and it lands in black because black is the colour that makes a gag look deliberate rather than cheap. The Dunk has become Nike's most jokeable model precisely because it was never precious: it was drawn in the mid 1980s as a college basketball shoe whose panels existed to be repainted for whichever programme was buying, and every themed release since has used that same modular logic. The house behind it was built by people who improvised, from Bill Bowerman pouring rubber into his wife's waffle iron to a graphic design student named Carolyn Davidson drawing the Swoosh first used in June 1971. Naming a shoe after a punchline is very much in character.
All black is a workhorse. Wear it with black jeans and a black tee for a full monochrome fit where only the sole edge breaks the block, or use it as the grounding piece under grey sweats and an olive jacket, where black keeps a mixed palette from drifting. It works in settings where a coloured sneaker would not, including casual offices and evenings out. Flat and firm underfoot, so good for city walking rather than long standing days. Fits true to size. Condition the leather every few months, wipe with a damp cloth rather than soaking, and keep it out of prolonged direct sun, which fades black leather to a dusty grey faster than wear does.
The Dunk's journey from college hardwood through skateboarding to general fashion turned it into a canvas, and Nike now uses it to say things that have nothing to do with sport. The brand earned that latitude in basketball, through the 1984 Michael Jordan signing and the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon advertising that made Nike the sport's default and, through the sport, a fixture in hip hop and mainstream American youth dress. Nike's own voice has always had a wink in it, from Just Do It in 1988 onward, and a shoe with a price joke for a name is that voice applied to product rather than advertising.
Black leather across the base and overlays means the panel structure is read through stitching, texture and sheen rather than colour contrast, so what you notice is the Dunk's actual geometry: the deep toe cap, the long Swoosh, the separated heel counter. Underneath sits the standard Dunk platform, a low profile foam midsole with a pivot circle rubber outsole, which gives you a flat, direct ride rather than a cushioned one. Padding is limited to the tongue and collar. All black is the most practical Dunk you can own, since scuffs and city dirt vanish, though leather in a single dark tone dries out faster in the sun and needs conditioning to keep from cracking at the flex crease. Fits true.
