Designed by Jason Petrie and part of the LeBron 13 line. This release has the University Red/Black-Bright Crimson colourway. LeBron James is a Nike signature athlete and endorser, which places this shoe in the small category the company has reserved for players it builds a whole product line around, a practice it began in 1984 with the Michael Jordan signing. The thirteenth model in that line, in its Elite specification, is the version made for the sharp end of a season rather than the shelf. University Red is a colour for that context: unbroken, high saturation, designed to register on a broadcast camera at full speed. Signature basketball shoes are among the few products where the athlete's actual working requirements and the retail buyer's desires point in roughly the same direction.
Use one: actual basketball, which is what this build is for, on clean indoor courts where the outsole pattern can do its job and the support structure earns its weight. Use two: worn casually with black or grey sweatpants and a plain tee, where a single red block at the floor is enough colour for the entire outfit. Performance basketball shoes fit snug by design, so size true and lace fully through the top eyelets to lock the heel. Do not use them outdoors regularly; abrasive concrete destroys indoor rubber compounds fast. Wipe the outsole before every session, air dry after use, and store away from direct heat, which stiffens midsole foam.
James is one of the athletes whose voice extends past the game: when Nike built a long term campaign around Colin Kaepernick in September 2018, drawing product burnings and condemnation from a police union, LeBron James and Serena Williams were among those who publicly supported it. An Elite build is a mid season upgrade rather than a new shoe, typically stiffening and lightening the upper of the standard model and reworking the support structure for players deep into a schedule. Nike's approach to holding a foot with minimal material runs through Flywire, a system of cables that anchors the foot to the platform without adding upper bulk, and that thinking sits behind most of the company's performance basketball uppers. A single saturated colour hides panel joins, so the shoe reads as one moulded object rather than an assembly. Court shoes pick up dust that dulls outsole grip. Wipe the outsole regularly and keep the upper away from moisture.
