Designed by Peter Moore and released on 1 August 2005 as part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has a leather upper in Aqua/Chrome. Nike has usually widened its world by partnership and acquisition rather than by inventing new scenes: distributing Onitsuka Tiger from 1964 to 1972, buying Hurley in 2002, Converse in 2003 for 309 million dollars, and later the virtual sneaker studio RTFKT in December 2021. The SB Dunk Low with Diamond Supply Co, known everywhere by its Tiffany blue upper, is the version of that instinct that worked best inside skating. It gave a skate brand the run of Nike's most argued about silhouette and produced a colour so specific that people now describe other shoes by reference to it. Few collaborations end up naming a shade.
Two builds. One, understated: black denim, a black tee, a black jacket, so the blue is the only colour anywhere and reads like a jewel. Two, tonal: grey wide trousers, a white crew, a navy overshirt, keeping the whole outfit cool toned so the shoe belongs rather than shouts. This is a dry weather, considered wear pair rather than a daily beater, whatever its skate origins. Protect the upper before first wear, wipe after every use, avoid soaking, and never use bleach or strong solvent on the light blue. Store boxed away from sunlight so the shade stays true. Keep spare laces too, since greyed ones spoil the whole effect.
This is the release that proved a skate collaboration could cross into general fashion without either side pretending. Nike's silhouettes had been status symbols in urban and hip hop dress since the 1980s, and Nike SB pulled the same trick inside skating, which is a scene historically suspicious of large companies. That suspicion was earned: the line's 2005 use of Minor Threat's album art drew a rebuke from Ian MacKaye and a Nike apology. Colour led collaborations like this one worked because they were about product rather than about borrowing someone's iconography, and the resale culture that followed made the SB Dunk a currency of its own.
SB Dunks are Dunks reinforced for impact: thicker padded tongue and collar, more cushioning under the heel for landing, and a flat waffle style outsole for board feel, all inside the original low top outline. The result is a shoe that looks like a classic basketball low from ten feet away and behaves like a skate shoe on a deck. Colour is doing heavy lifting on this pair, so the panel separation between the light blue upper and its darker trim is what makes it legible at a distance. Pale blue marks easily and cannot be scrubbed back, so treat before wear and clean gently.
