Culture Note™
Released on 8 May 2020 and part of the 4D Runner line. This release has a mesh upper in Cloud White/Cloud White/Cloud White. The 4D Run 1.0 is adidas testing whether a midsole needs to be foam at all. Instead of a moulded slab, the sole is a lattice, a structure whose behaviour comes from its geometry rather than from a compound, which is a different engineering argument to Boost and a genuinely radical one. The Parley partnership adds an environmental brief on top of the technical one. In White Iridescent, the shoe is at its most laboratory-like: a pale upper with a shifting sheen over a visible printed structure, so the sole reads as the product and the upper as packaging. adidas has form for this kind of ambition, having marketed the adidas 1 in 2005 as the world's first intelligent shoe.
This is a design object with running roots, so wear it accordingly. First recipe: full black or charcoal technical clothing, cropped trousers and a shell, so the white upper and lattice sole are the only light elements in the fit. Second: light grey sweats with a white tee for a soft tonal build where the iridescence catches instead of clashes. Treat them as walking and travel shoes rather than serious mileage, since the lattice and the iridescent upper both prefer clean dry surfaces. Size true with thin socks. Clean the lattice cells regularly, keep them out of rain and sun, and accept that white iridescent finishes need attention to stay sharp.
adidas has always run two engines. One is culture it did not manufacture, from Jesse Owens wearing Dassler handmade spikes at the 1936 Berlin Olympics to Run-DMC recording My Adidas unpaid in 1986. The other is engineering spectacle, which produced Boost with BASF in 2013, the carbon rod adizero racing platform, springblade and the adidas 1. The 4D belongs to the second engine, and Parley pushes it toward a sustainability argument that the wider industry has been forced to take seriously. It is a shoe that exists to make a point rather than to sell in volume, which is why the limited framing suits it.
The defining element is a printed lattice midsole, a three-dimensional structure that tunes cushioning through its own architecture rather than through foam density, paired with a light knit running upper. Iridescent finishes are surface treatments, which means they scratch rather than stain, so avoid abrasive cleaners entirely and use a soft damp cloth. The lattice traps grit inside its cells, and a soft brush or compressed air clears it better than washing. Keep the shoe away from heat and prolonged sun: printed sole structures and iridescent coatings both degrade faster than conventional rubber and leather. Never machine wash, and store them upright so the lattice is not compressed under weight.
