Culture Note™
Released on 3 December 2023 and part of Nike's Zoom Fly 5 line. This release has a mesh upper in University Red/Blue Joy/Melon Tint/White. Every fast shoe Nike sells now lives downstream of one decision. In 2017 the company launched the Vaporfly, pairing ZoomX foam with a full length carbon fibre plate, and the marathon has not been the same since. The Zoom Fly 5 belongs to that family as the harder wearing, more forgiving option, the shoe for the workouts that build towards a race rather than the race itself. University Red with Blue Joy is a colourway with no interest in subtlety, which suits a session shoe: you wear these on days when you have decided to run properly, and the colour is part of the decision.
Two uses. One, workouts: tempo runs, intervals and progression long runs, where a firmer platform gives you feedback and holds up to repeated hard sessions. Two, race day for shorter distances if you would rather not spend a racer's limited life on a ten kilometre. Pair with thin technical socks and lace firmly through the midfoot. Size with a thumbnail of toe room. Care is standard running shoe discipline: no machine washing, cool water and mild soap by hand, insoles out, dry in shade, and rotate with a softer daily trainer so your legs get variety. Retire the pair when the ride starts to feel dead underfoot.
The Vaporfly did not just win races, it changed the rules: peer research found it could improve marathon times by up to 4.2 percent, and on 31 January 2020 World Athletics responded with limits capping sole thickness at 40mm, allowing one rigid plate and requiring shoes to be openly available at retail before competition. Compliant models remain legal. That episode reset expectations for every shoe below the racer as well, because once runners had felt what a modern platform does, nobody wanted to train in something that felt dead. This shoe exists in the space that argument created.
This is a speed oriented trainer rather than a maximum comfort one, so expect a firmer, more directed ride than a daily cushioned shoe and better durability than a pure racer. Nike's foam work spans from Lunarlite through to ZoomX, its altered Pebax racing foam, and its uppers descend from the Flywire idea of holding the foot with cables so less material is needed, with Dri-FIT handling sweat. Bright multi colour builds show scuffing on the midsole edge before anywhere else. Rinse road grit off after wet runs and let the shoe dry fully, because repeated wet drying cycles kill midsole glue faster than mileage.
