Released on 1 March 2023 and part of New Balance's 327 line. This release has a suede upper in Grey Matter/White. The 327 is New Balance rewriting its own 1970s running shapes with modern proportions, an oversized N across the side wall, a flared outsole and a much sharper, more graphic stance than the archive models it borrows from. It is the brand's most design-led everyday shoe, made for people who want the reference without the bulk. That willingness to reinterpret rather than reissue comes from a company confident about where it came from. New Balance started in 1906 as the New Balance Arch Support Company, became a runner's brand through fit rather than through image, and has stayed privately held since Jim Davis bought it in 1972.
The 327's low, flared stance is its styling advantage. Recipe one is slim and clean: cropped straight leg trousers, a plain white tee, a light jacket, so the flared outsole and oversized N read as the outfit's only graphic. Recipe two is casual denim: mid wash jeans with a grey sweatshirt, where the shoe keeps things modern rather than retro. It works with cropped hems that a chunky runner would swamp. Good as an everyday walking and travel shoe, less suited to sport. Clean the suede or nubuck panels with a dry brush, use mild soap only on the synthetic sections, and keep the exposed outsole scrubbed since it collects dirt at the edges.
The 327 arrived when New Balance's cultural stock was rising fast, and it was designed to convert that interest into something wearable. The 990 family had made the brand the American dad shoe, the plain comfort choice documented on Steve Jobs, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff, and normcore then high fashion reclaimed that plainness as a position in the 2010s, while the Made in England 99x models had a parallel life in British terrace and casual dressing. The 327 speaks to the fashion audience that arrived through those doors, with a graphic identity strong enough to work in photographs and simple enough to wear daily.
The 327 is built around its graphics. The side wall N is enlarged until it becomes the structure of the shoe rather than a badge on it, and the panelling behind it is kept simple so that shape stays dominant, with the flared, exposed outsole giving the silhouette its low, wide stance. The upper is slimmer and less layered than a 99x model, which is why the 327 wears light and sits close to the ground. New Balance's cushioning philosophy still frames the ride, with ENCAP's polyurethane rim around a soft EVA core representing the brand's preference for support that lasts. Use the width fittings if the last feels narrow.
