Designed by Horst Dassler and released on 26 March 2021 as part of the Stan Smith line. This release has a leather upper in Cloud White/Collegiate Green/Off White. White with collegiate green is the Stan Smith formula with the accent colour swapped, and the swap is the entire product. The shoe is one of two adidas silhouettes, alongside the Superstar, that became the base layer of European football terrace and casual dressing, and it did so by being almost nothing: a clean white tennis shape, perforated stripes rather than stitched ones, and a single colour on the heel tab and lining. Everything else was removed. That restraint is why it survived. Where the Superstar shouts through its shell toe, the Stan Smith works by being the quietest shoe in the room, and a deep collegiate green heel gives it just enough identity to not be anonymous. This is the sports shoe that works with tailoring. Wear it with slim navy or grey trousers and an unstructured jacket for the smart casual read, letting the green heel be the only visible accent, or with cropped khaki chinos and a white oxford for a summer look where the green picks up the outfit's warmth. It runs long and narrow, so most people go half a size down. White leather style uppers need wiping rather than washing: a damp cloth after each wear, a soft brush on the midsole sidewall, and creases at the toe treated as inevitable rather than as damage.
The Stan Smith and the Superstar are named together in the adidas story as the two shoes that took the company out of sport and into everyday European dress, and they did it from opposite directions. The Superstar arrived through American basketball and then hip hop, when Run-DMC's My Adidas in 1986 produced the first endorsement deal between a musical act and an athletic company. The Stan Smith arrived through tennis and then through sheer ubiquity, becoming the default white shoe for people who did not want a fashion decision. It is the plainest thing adidas makes and one of the hardest to displace.
The Stan Smith is built as a tennis shoe, so the upper is smooth and unbroken, the stripes are perforations punched through the panel rather than sewn on top, and the sole is a flat cupsole with a low profile and minimal tread. That perforation detail is a deliberate departure from the adidas norm, since the Three Stripes elsewhere on the brand began as reinforcement stitched onto the upper. Here they are subtracted instead of added. The collegiate green appears at the heel tab, and possibly the lining and tongue mark, which is the only place the shoe allows colour.
