    Culture Note™

Designed by Bruce Kilgore and released on 16 June 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 2 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Cherrywood Red/Light Steel Grey. Cherrywood is a deep red brown, a furniture colour rather than a sports colour, and it lands on the model that first carried Nike Air into the Jordan line. The Air Jordan 2 arrived after the original shoe had already blown past every projection Nike made, when the company understood it had bought something bigger than a basketball endorsement. Cutting that silhouette down to a Low and finishing it in cherrywood turns a historically significant basketball shoe into something you would wear to dinner. That is a fair reflection of where the brand sits now: a Nike division that generated about 5.1 billion dollars in 2022 and long ago stopped needing the court to justify a colourway.
Cherrywood behaves like a brown leather shoe, so treat it like one. Charcoal or navy tailored trousers with a fine knit gives you something you can wear to a restaurant without it reading sporty. The second recipe is casual: raw indigo denim, a cream crew, and a brown belt to echo the tone, which is the most natural home for a red brown shoe. Avoid black trousers, which make the brown look muddy. Low cut means walking rather than sport. Condition rather than scrub, since rich tones dull quickly under harsh cleaners, and keep it out of rain, which spots warm dyed materials unevenly.
The 2 has always been the connoisseur's Jordan, the model that comes back for audiences who already own the obvious pairs. That churn is possible because the Air Jordan line created the collecting culture in the first place: original 1985 pairs have traded around 20,000 dollars on StockX, and the resale market the brand anchors is valued at roughly two billion dollars. Jordan Brand's fashion credibility, built through Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS, is what makes a low cut basketball shoe in cherrywood a reasonable proposition rather than a costume.
Nike Air cushioning entered the Jordan line with the Air Jordan 2, which is the technical fact this silhouette is built on. The Low cut removes the collar height, so there is no ankle coverage and the shoe reads flat and long on foot, which suits a rich single tone. Cherrywood is dark enough to hide daily scuffing but warm enough that the midsole contrast is what your eye lands on, so keep the sole edge clean if you want the shoe to look sharp. Deep reds and browns can transfer onto light socks and light hems when new, so wear dark socks for the first few outings and keep it dry.
