Culture Note™
Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 7 January 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 4 line. This release has a suede upper in French Blue/White/Gym Red/Pearl White/Chutney/Altitude Green. French blue is a colour name from tailoring, and on the Air Jordan 4 it lands in a place the brand has genuinely been. Jordan Brand sponsored Paris Saint-Germain in 2018, its first association football club, after taking on the Michigan Wolverines football programme in 2016, so blue and Paris are not a stretch for this house any more. The 4 itself belongs to Tinker Hatfield's run, the stretch from the third model onward when the line became a design series rather than a yearly restyle. A cool, saturated blue on that shape strips out the Chicago reference entirely and leaves you with pure silhouette.
Strong blue is easiest against neutrals. Recipe one: grey sweatpants with real volume, a white tee, a navy or grey hoodie, keeping every other surface tonal. Recipe two: black straight leg denim with a cuff sitting above the collar, a cream knit, a black jacket, so the blue is the only saturated point. Avoid mid blue denim, which competes directly. The 4 is bulky and needs a trouser with width; skinny hems exaggerate the toe. Good in spring and autumn, less good in heavy rain if any panel is napped. Protect before first wear, brush textured areas, and clean the white base early.
The move into association football with Paris Saint-Germain in 2018 is the clearest evidence that this brand outgrew its sport. It began as a defensive play, with Nike losing basketball to Converse and adidas and buying a rookie's identity because a superstar was unaffordable, and it ended as a division generating about 5.1 billion dollars for Nike by 2022. The 4 sits at the centre of that reach because it is the silhouette collaborators keep choosing: Travis Scott's Cactus Jack work covered the Air Jordan 1, 4 and 6, which put this exact shape into the middle of the modern hype economy.
The 4 is built around exposed structure: a heavily worked upper, visible support elements and hardware around the lacing, all of which read more clearly in a single strong colour than in a busy one. Nike Air cushioning has been in the line since the second model and remains the underfoot idea. French blue is saturated enough to flatten the panel divisions slightly, so the shape reads as one sculpted mass with white at the base holding the outline. Jordan Brand publishes no per colourway material breakdown, so confirm in hand whether the blue panels are leather, suede or a mesh style textile, because each ages on a different schedule.
