Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 9 November 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 9 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/True Red/Light Olive. The Air Jordan 9 comes from the stretch when the line had fully become a design series rather than a single signature shoe, the run that started when Tinker Hatfield took over from the III and gave each model its own identity and material language. It is one of the less quoted numbers in the catalogue, which is part of its appeal: people who wear a 9 usually chose it rather than inherited it. Olive puts the model in military and workwear territory, a colour with no basketball association at all, and that suits a silhouette better known for its sculpted, enclosed shape than for any court colourway.
Olive is a neutral that behaves like a colour, so treat it as the anchor. Black straight leg trousers and a cream sweatshirt gives it a clean frame, while olive cargos with a black shell makes a full utility outfit where the shoe is the warmest element. The 9's enclosed shape suits a trouser that breaks over it rather than a cropped hem, which can make a substantial shoe look heavier. The 9 is a fuller, more enclosed shoe than the 1, with a shaped collar and an upper that wraps the foot rather than layering flat panels over it. Nike Air cushioning has been part of the line from the Air Jordan II onward and it is what makes a substantial shoe like this wearable through a long day. A single olive tone across the upper puts all the emphasis on the shape, so the silhouette is the design rather than the colour blocking. Darker earth tones hide scuffs well, but the seams and the midsole edge are where dirt gathers on a wrapped upper. Brush along the seams and clean the sole edge rather than the panels.
