Culture Note™
Designed by Don C and released on 26 April 2022 as part of the Jordan Legacy 312 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Black/Gym Red. The 312 in the name is Chicago's own area code, and Chicago is where the whole thing started: a Bulls rookie signed in October 1984, a shoe built for him the following month, a public release on 1 April 1985. Red, black and white stopped being a team palette a long time ago and became brand colours in their own right, which is why a Chicago makeup needs no explanation on a shelf. You are wearing the origin story in shorthand.
Two combinations that work. First, straight leg indigo denim with a plain white tee and a black bomber, letting the red do all the shouting and keeping everything above the waist quiet. Second, black wide leg trousers with a cream knit and a mid crew sock, which turns the same shoe into evening wear without pretending it is a dress shoe. Low cuts run with cropped or stacked hems, not with a break that swallows the toe box. Keep white panels clean with a soft brush and a little foam, never a soaked cloth, since water carries dirt into leather perforations. Rotate them, let them dry a full day between wears, and use cedar or paper to hold the shape.
Chicago is the load bearing city in this brand's mythology. Nike was losing basketball to Converse and adidas when it signed Jordan, and the campaign that followed, with Spike Lee directing and playing Mars Blackmon opposite him, put a sneaker inside film language for the first time. Rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z put Jordan and his shoes into their records, and the resale market the line anchors has been valued at roughly 2 billion dollars. A Chicago colourway on a hybrid silhouette is a quotation rather than a reissue: it borrows the palette that carries all of that weight and puts it somewhere new.
A low cut, panelled upper is the point here: this silhouette is built to hold several eras of Jordan design language at once, so the seams and colour blocking do more work than any single material does. Leather and synthetic panels take the red, black and white split cleanly, which is what makes a Chicago colourway legible from across a street. Nike Air cushioning has been standard in the line since the second model, and the low profile keeps the ride closer to the ground than a retro basketball high does. No stack height or plate detail is published for this pair. Expect a firmer, flatter feel than a padded runner, and size it the way you size a leather sneaker, snug now, settled after a week.
