Culture Note™
Designed by Jason Petrie and released on 24 October 2022 as part of the LeBron 20 line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/Black/University Red/University Gold/Light Smoke Grey. Nike learned in 1984, when it signed Michael Jordan, that a signature athlete could become a business rather than an endorsement, and LeBron James is the athlete who inherited that model at full scale. He is one of Nike's signature athletes and endorsers, and the LeBron line has always been built for a heavy, fast, physically enormous player rather than a guard. The XX is the twentieth chapter of that brief. The EP designation marks the version engineered for hardwood outside North America, and Black with University Red is the line's most direct palette, a shoe that reads as equipment first and gives you exactly one colour of aggression.
This is a performance shoe, so let it perform. Recipe one for the floor: black compression tights under mesh shorts and a plain black tee, with the University Red doing all the work at ankle height. Recipe two off court: black straight-leg trackpants with a taper, a red-accented black hoodie, and a heavy black parka, which lets a bulky basketball shoe read as deliberate proportion rather than gym overspill. Size true to size and wear performance-thickness socks, because signature basketball lasts are cut for lockdown, not lounging. Keep the outsole clean for grip, wipe the upper after games, and rotate pairs if you play more than twice a week so the cushioning recovers between sessions.
Nike has been the official on court uniform supplier to the NBA, WNBA and NBA G League since 2017, under a deal signed in June 2015 and extended for a further twelve years announced in October 2024, which means the league's visual language and Nike's are now the same language. LeBron James sits at the centre of that as a signature athlete and endorser, and his voice has carried beyond the floor: he publicly supported Colin Kaepernick when Nike built a long term campaign around him in September 2018, a campaign that drew product burnings and police union condemnation alongside support from Serena Williams. A black and red signature shoe is not neutral in that context. It never was.
Everything about a LeBron build answers weight and force. Expect a substantial, high-volume upper with structured containment through the midfoot, a wide and heavily lugged traction pattern, and cushioning tuned for repeated hard landings rather than lightness. Nike Air is the foundation of that philosophy, a pressurised gas unit sealed in the midsole for cushioning and, from the 1987 Air Max onward, made visible so the cushioning itself became a design feature. Flywire, which uses cables to lock the foot down with minimal upper material, is the other half of the equation, holding a large athlete in place without adding bulk. The black upper hides scuffing well and the University Red hits are placed to read from a distance on court.
