Origin
Released on 1 October 2021 and part of New Balance's 990v3 line. This release has a suede upper in Black/Grey/White. The 990 is the shoe that built the premium end of New Balance. The concept formed in 1978 and it launched in 1982, and the family has run in versions ever since: 990v2 in 1998, 991 in 2001, 992 in 2006, 993 in 2008 and the 990v3 in 2012. The v3 is the one that reads widest and most cushioned in that sequence, and in black it loses the grey signature that made the line famous while keeping the bulk that made it comfortable. This is a Made in USA build, one of the specific domestic lines the company runs from its New England factories rather than a general claim about the range. That badge is the reason the 99x line prices where it does.
Utility
The v3 is a big shoe, so give it room in the outfit. Recipe one: wide black trousers with a full break, a heavy grey sweatshirt and a work jacket, where the shoe anchors the whole silhouette. Recipe two: dark denim with a straight leg, a black tee and an unstructured blazer, a smarter build where the sneaker stays sober because there is no contrast panelling. Best for standing all day, travel, long city walks and anyone who wants support rather than a low profile. Use the width fittings properly, since the 990 rewards an exact fit. Brush the upper dry, spot clean sparingly, never machine wash a Made in USA build, and air dry away from heat.
Influence
No shoe carries New Balance's cultural weight like the 990. It became the archetypal American dad shoe, the grey suburban running shoe worn for comfort rather than status, favoured by Steve Jobs and worn by Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff. Normcore and then high fashion reclaimed exactly that plainness in the 2010s, turning it into a design position. The Made in England 99x models ran a parallel life in British terrace and casual dressing. In April 2021 Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis was appointed creative director of Made in USA, formalising the archive as a fashion line. A black v3 is that history with the volume of the colour turned down.
Construction
ENCAP is the 990 family's midsole, introduced with the 995 in 1986: a moulded polyurethane rim encapsulating a soft EVA core, so polyurethane delivers structure, durability and low compression set while EVA absorbs shock. That combination is why a 990 feels supportive rather than soft, and why it lasts. On top sits the layered upper with the block N on the side wall, and the Made in USA tongue badge that New Balance treats as a product signature in its own right. Multiple width fittings run through the line, the oldest promise the company makes, inherited from the arch support business it opened with in 1906. Black removes the contrast panelling and leaves you reading pure volume.
