Origin
Designed by Bruce Kilgore and released on 21 September 2024 as part of Nike's Air Force 1 line. This release has a suede upper in Black/Summit White/Gum Light Brown. The Air Force 1 came out of Nike's basketball era and then outgrew it completely, becoming the single most durable silhouette the company has. The 07 LV8 designation is where Nike gives the standard shoe a materials upgrade, and this Gum Pack execution pairs a black upper with a gum rubber outsole, which is the oldest trick in footwear for making a sports shoe look like a workwear one. Gum soles come from a period when rubber was left uncoloured, and their reappearance is a deliberate reference to that. Against black leather the amber sole is the only warm element in the shoe, and it changes the whole read from athletic to something closer to a boot.
Utility
Recipe one: dark raw denim with a single cuff, a cream cable knit and a brown leather jacket, letting the gum sole echo the warmth in the jacket. Recipe two: black work trousers, an olive overshirt and a black tee, an all utility fit where the amber sole stops the outfit going flat. Black leather and gum is the most weather tolerant Air Force 1 combination, so this is the pair for commuting and travel. Air Force 1s run about half a size large. Gum rubber yellows and darkens with wear, which is normal, but you can slow it by cleaning the sidewall with mild soap and a soft brush and keeping the pair out of prolonged direct sun.
Influence
From the 1980s the Air Force 1 sat alongside Air Jordans and Air Max models as a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion, then became a staple of mainstream American youth dress before returning through 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks. That history is usually told through the all white pair, but black with gum is the version that survives cities with weather. It borrows its logic from workwear rather than the court, and it lands closer to the company's Oregon origins, a business that started in 1964 selling practical imported running shoes from a car boot, than to anything sold on ceremony.
Construction
The Air Force 1 is a heavy low top by design: thick leather panels, perforated toe venting, a padded collar, a moulded heel with a pull tab and a substantial cupsole. Cushioning sits sealed inside the midsole rather than behind a window, so the ride is firm and planted, which is why the shoe has survived four decades of daily wear. The gum outsole is uncoloured rubber, and it grips well on smooth surfaces but marks and darkens with use in a way white rubber does not. On an LV8 build expect upgraded leather or texture across the panels. Black hides the creasing that the toe box will inevitably develop, which makes this the low maintenance version of the model.
