Designed by Sergio Lozano and released on 30 September 2024 as part of Nike's Air Max 95 line. This release has a suede upper in Summit White/Cacao Wow/Light British Tan/Velvet Brown. Unearthed suits the Air Max 95 better than most themes, because the 95 was always designed as a cross section: layered panels stacked like strata, meant to be read from the ground up. The model sits inside the Air Max line that started in 1987, when Nike first sealed a pressurised gas unit into a midsole and then cut a window so you could see it, turning cushioning into the point of the design rather than a hidden feature. By the mid 1990s Nike had spent a decade making the invisible visible, and the 95 pushed that further with Air in the forefoot as well as the heel. Excavation is the right metaphor for a shoe built out of layers.
First recipe: tapered cargo trousers in olive or stone with the hem gathered at the ankle, a plain black tee and a work jacket, so the layered panels stay visible and the outfit stays in the same earth register. Second: black nylon trousers with a technical shell for wet city days, where the muted palette keeps a busy shoe from taking over. It suits walking, travel and casual weekends rather than sport. The 95 fits snugly through the midfoot because of the low lacing, so try true to size and consider half up if you have a high instep. Brush the panel seams dry, spot clean with mild soap, and never machine wash a multi panel upper.
The Air Max 95 is one of the models that turned Nike engineering into street uniform, part of the shift that saw Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max shoes move from sport into urban and hip hop fashion from the 1980s onward and then into the casual and athleisure looks of the 1990s and 2000s. In Britain and Japan especially the 95 carries its own separate history as a city shoe with real regional loyalty. A weathered, earth toned treatment plays to how these shoes actually live: bought clean, worn hard, valued more once they show it. Nike Grind, which recycles scrap and worn shoes into new product, sits in the same thinking.
The 95's structure is its identity: gradient panels layered over a mesh and synthetic base, with the lacing anchored low so the eyelets sit deeper on the foot than on almost any other Nike silhouette. Unearthed treatments work by aging the material palette, so expect textured and tonal panels that look weathered rather than factory fresh, with the layering still readable as bands. Underneath, visible Air sits in the heel and forefoot, the sealed pressurised principle Nike has built midsoles on since 1987, giving the 95 its characteristic soft, slightly bouncy walking feel. The many panels mean many seams, and seams are where dirt collects, so a soft brush is more useful here than any cloth.
