Designed by Peter Moore and released on 18 January 2023 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a textile upper in White/White/University Red/Black. Nike did not start out making shoes. Blue Ribbon Sports opened in Eugene, Oregon in 1964 selling imported Onitsuka Tiger runners out of Phil Knight's car at track meets, and only took the Nike name and Carolyn Davidson's Swoosh at the start of the 1970s. The Dunk belongs to the era after that, when the company held roughly half the US athletic shoe market and could treat a hardwood court silhouette as a canvas. Plaid is both the joke and the point on this pair: a check normally reserved for tailoring or punk trousers, cut into the panels of a shoe built for pivoting on a wooden floor. The white foundation under style code DV0827 100 keeps the pattern legible, so it reads as a deliberate interruption rather than noise.
Recipe one: cream or ecru wide leg trousers, a plain white tee and a navy overshirt, letting the check be the only pattern in the fit. Recipe two: raw indigo jeans stacked slightly over the collar, a grey hoodie and a black cap, so the plaid reads as texture rather than a statement. Keep everything else solid; add a second pattern and the shoe loses the argument. Dunks run long on most feet, so consider a half size down if you are between sizes, and expect a crease across the toe within a few wears. Brush the patterned panels dry, spot clean instead of soaking, and keep them away from monsoon puddles, because fabric overlays hold water marks far longer than leather does.
From the 1980s onward the Swoosh became a status marker in urban and hip hop dress, and Nike's court shoes did the heavy lifting: Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models moved from gyms to sidewalks, then reappeared through 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure wardrobes. The Dunk travelled the same road, which is why a pattern led pair like this one lands as fashion rather than sportswear. Plaid arrives carrying its own history, preppy tailoring on one side, punk and skate on the other, and putting it on a Nike silhouette is exactly the kind of code mixing the brand has traded on since Just Do It gave it a voice outside sport.
The Dunk was drawn as a court shoe and that is still what you are buying: a low, flat riding silhouette with a leather led upper, a foam midsole and a rubber outsole cut with a pivot circle under the forefoot. On this pair the check sits on the overlays, meaning it lands on the panels that flex hardest, the toe box and the mudguard, and it will crease with them. There is no visible air unit here, so cushioning comes from midsole foam alone and the ride stays close to the ground and direct underfoot. Nike's construction instinct since Bill Bowerman poured rubber into a waffle iron has been to solve for grip and weight first, and a Dunk still reads that way: minimal and built to be scuffed.
