Designed by Peter Moore and released on 11 June 2024 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Summit White/Platinum Tint/White/Midnight Navy. White with Midnight Navy is the Dunk in its purest form. The shoe was designed as a two-colour system, a white base with a contrast panel and swoosh, and every celebrated pair since has been a variation on that grammar. Navy is the most conservative and most durable choice within it, a colour that carries none of the seasonal noise the model has attracted and does not date. The Retro tier means the shoe is built to the original proportions rather than to a modernised last, which is what people are actually buying: a flat, low, plain court shoe with no visible cushioning, made at a time when a basketball shoe did not need to prove anything.
Two recipes. First, the classic: straight-leg raw or mid-wash denim with a slight break over the toe, a white tee or grey crewneck, navy picked up nowhere else. Second, sharper: navy tailored trousers cropped at the ankle with a white shirt, using the shoe the way you would use a plain sneaker with tailoring. Dunks run slightly long and narrow, so true to size works for most and a half down suits narrow feet. Keep them out of the wet, white panels stain permanently. Brush after every wear, clean the white with mild soap and a soft brush before marks set, and store with shape support so the toe crease stays shallow.
The Dunk's second life came from skateboarding, where a flat wide court shoe was adopted long before Nike had a skate programme, and the brand's response, Nike SB, has spent its existence negotiating with that scene. Nike has occasionally overstepped there, most publicly when SB used Minor Threat's album art in 2005, drew a rebuke from Ian MacKaye and apologised. The general release Dunk sits outside that argument. It follows the older Nike pattern instead, the one that took Air Force 1s, Air Max models and Air Jordans out of sport and into everyday youth dress, and a white and navy pair is that pattern at its least performative.
The Dunk's construction is honest to the point of bluntness. A panelled upper stitched in large flat sections, a low collar with a padded rim, a thin midsole and a flat outsole with none of the Air cushioning Nike puts in its performance shoes. That is why it feels so direct underfoot and why it holds its shape for years. In a white and navy build, the panel breaks are the entire design, so the quality of the cut lines is what separates a good pair from a bad one. Expect no break-in from the sole and a real one from the upper, which softens across the flex point over a couple of weeks of regular wear.
