Designed by Peter Moore and released on 20 December 2016 as part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has the Legion Green/White colourway. Nike SB exists because skating would not accept a running shoe with a Swoosh on it, and by the 2000s Nike had learned to build for board sports properly, buying Hurley in 2002 and Converse in 2003 for 309 million dollars as it widened past its own core. The SB Dunk Low in Camo Legion Green comes from that arm of the company: military pattern on a shape that started life on hardwood, in a green dark enough to hide a season of griptape marks. Camo on a skate shoe is not a fashion reference, it is a practical one, because pattern hides wear better than any solid colour ever will.
Two ways. One, skate: baggy denim or twill stacked on the collar, a heavyweight tee, and the green camo taking abuse without showing every mark. Two, utility casual: black cargos cuffed once, an olive fleece, a beanie, with the pattern reading as texture rather than as costume. Good in the dry, and reasonably forgiving of dust, which makes them practical for Indian city wear. Brush the panels dry, use a mild foam cleaner on the midsole only, replace laces when they fray from griptape rather than trying to clean them, and let them dry naturally after a wet ride home.
Skate credibility is not something a company with roughly half the US athletic shoe market by 1980 can simply buy, and Nike SB has learned that publicly. In 2005 the line reused Minor Threat's album artwork on a tour flyer, and Ian MacKaye's rebuke forced an apology from Nike on 27 June 2005 and an out of court settlement. Camo releases sit on a similar fault line, borrowing from military dress the way skating itself borrowed from surplus stores. What has kept SB Dunks culturally alive is not the marketing but the fact that skaters kept using them, and then everybody else followed.
An SB Dunk is built differently from a general release Dunk: skating needs cushioning under the heel for repeated impact and a padded tongue and collar so the laces and eyestays do not cut into the foot. That padding is why an SB sits and feels chunkier than a standard Dunk Low even though the outline is the same. Camo panels help disguise the scuffing that skating guarantees, particularly along the ollie area. Grip comes from Nike's waffle tread lineage, which began when Bowerman poured rubber into his wife's waffle iron, and flat waffle patterns remain the most reliable interface between a shoe and a board.
