Released on 28 November 2024 and part of the Vapor Edge line. This release has a synthetic upper in Green Apple/Black/Volt/Bright Crimson. Nike's basketball design language has been leaking into its other sports for decades, and the Vapor Edge is where it lands on American football. This SE takes the Grinch colourway from the Kobe 6, one of the most instantly recognisable green and red schemes Nike basketball ever produced, and puts it on a cleat. Cross sport translation like this is only possible for a company whose visual signatures are strong enough to survive the move: the Swoosh, first used on 18 June 1971 and drawn by graphic design student Carolyn Davidson, and a colour palette people can name on sight. The result is a football shoe that basketball fans recognise before football fans do.
Cleats are single purpose equipment. Wear them on grass or turf with the sock length your position demands, and keep a second pair of shoes for the walk to and from the field, because studs destroy pavement grip and pavement destroys studs. Fit should be snug with no heel lift at all, since any slip inside the shoe becomes a lost cut; size true or half down from your trainer size. Off field, this is a display piece rather than a streetwear option. Clean after every session: knock off mud while it is wet, brush the plate and stud bases, wipe the upper with a damp cloth, and dry away from direct heat so the plate does not warp.
Nike's grip on American sport is contractual as well as cultural: it has been the official on court uniform supplier to the NBA, WNBA and NBA G League since 2017 under a deal signed in June 2015 and extended for another twelve years. That level of presence lets it move a famous basketball colourway onto a football field and expect everyone to get the reference. The brand has always understood sport as spectacle, from Spike Lee directing Mars Blackmon in Air Jordan advertising to Just Do It becoming, per Advertising Age, one of the top five slogans of the twentieth century. A holiday themed cleat is that same instinct at play, sport dressed for television.
This is a cleat, so everything is built for grass and turf rather than hardwood. The upper is a low, close fitting synthetic build designed to keep the foot locked over the plate through cuts, and Nike's Flywire principle, cables holding the foot with minimal upper material, is the clearest version of that idea in the range. The plate underfoot carries the studs and is the component doing the traction work, replacing the waffle and herringbone patterns you find on Nike's court and running shoes. The Grinch green is applied across the upper with red contrast doing the detailing, which on a matte synthetic reads brighter and flatter than the same colours on leather.
