Culture Note™
Released on 24 January 2022 and part of the Mexico 66 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Silver. Silver Off White is the Mexico 66 in its coolest register. The 1966 original was a leather flat built for speed, a flagship meant to line up against Adidas and Puma before the 1968 Mexico City Games, and it has been reinterpreted more times than any other shoe in the range. Here the crossed Tiger Stripes arrive in a metallic silver over an off white body, which turns the brand's structural graphic into a reflective line that changes with the light. Silver does something no dyed colour can: it moves. Stand still and the shoe reads almost tonal, then it catches a light source and the stripes separate hard from the upper.
Two recipes. First, grey wide leg trousers with a white shirt and silver toned jewellery, where the stripes work as hardware rather than as colour. Second, black slim jeans with a charcoal knit for an evening, using the silver as the only light in the fit. This is a colourway for dry conditions and hard floors, not for long walks on gritty pavement. Take your usual size in the narrow last. Never brush the silver panels, since abrasion removes the finish permanently. Wipe them with a soft dry cloth and clean the off white body separately with mild soap and a soft brush.
Metallics are a marker of how far this brand has travelled from its beginnings. Kihachiro Onitsuka started making basketball shoes in Kobe in 1949 for Japanese youth in the post war years, and the company spent the fifties and sixties solving sport problems. The label that exists now was revived by Asics in 2002 as fashion, and it has climbed hard into premium lifestyle since, growing strongly enough that Asics has announced a move to a newly created subsidiary, OT GROUP Corporation, from January 2027, running as an independent global headquarters. A silver Mexico 66 is a premium lifestyle product, not a running shoe.
The bones are standard: slim upper, narrow last, low flat profile, thin cupsole and Tiger Stripes as stitched overlay panels doing structural work on the quarter. The silver is a metallic surface finish rather than a dye, which means it behaves like a coating. It resists staining but it abrades, so a deep scuff on a stripe panel is permanent in a way a scuff on leather is not. The off white body is the softer, more forgiving half of the shoe and will yellow slightly with age. Underfoot there is no cushioning and no arch structure, just a flat, flexible platform with genuine ground feel.
