Origin
Released on 4 August 2023 and part of the Yeezy 450 line. This release has a primeknit upper in Stone Grey/Stone Grey/Stone Grey. The 450 sits at the far end of the adidas Yeezy run, the partnership that opened in February 2015 alongside the Yeezy Season 1 show at New York Fashion Week and that adidas terminated on 25 October 2022. By the time this shape landed, the line had stopped arguing with running shoes and started behaving like sculpture. Stone Grey follows the naming convention the label set early with Pirate Black, Oxford Tan, Turtle Dove and Moonrock: colours named after materials and terrain rather than teams or seasons. Stone reads as quarried rock, a flat mineral grey that keeps the silhouette calm from across a room and lets the strangeness of the sole show only in profile. Kanye West founded the label in 2013 to control footwear design outright, and shapes this uncompromising are what that control produced.
Utility
Stone Grey is a neutral, so treat it as one. First recipe: wide leg grey flannel trousers cropped just above the sole, a plain white heavyweight tee, an unstructured black overshirt. The tonal grey stops the sculpted sole from reading as costume. Second recipe: black nylon cargos with the hem tucked into a low sock, an oversized hoodie in bone or off white, nothing branded. Occasion wise this is a walking and standing shoe for street use, not a gym shoe or a formal one. Sizing on this shape runs snug through the midfoot because of the knit, so try before you commit if you have a high instep. Clean the knit with a soft brush and mild soap only, air dry away from heat, and keep the pale grey out of monsoon puddles.
Influence
This is the line that turned a sneaker release into a mainstream event. Limited drops built queue culture, bot buying and a resale economy that reshaped how the whole industry sells, and by the end the partnership was generating roughly two billion dollars a year for adidas. GQ called these the most influential sneakers of their moment in 2016, and Forbes described the commercial rise as one of the great retail stories of the century in 2020. The 450 belongs to the late chapter, when the design language had moved far enough that mass market brands were chasing the moulded shapes rather than the knit runners. That story ended abruptly: adidas cut ties on 25 October 2022 after Kanye West made antisemitic remarks the company called unacceptable and dangerous.
Construction
Two technologies carried the adidas Yeezy line, Boost foam and Primeknit uppers, and the 450 inherits the knit side of that lineage rather than the pellet midsole that made the 350 and 750 bounce. You get a knit led upper in the sock fit tradition the label established, meaning it stretches over the instep instead of clamping down with panels and overlays. The sole is a moulded unit rather than an assembly of stitched parts, which is the same manufacturing logic that produced the Foam Runner and the Slide. As with most adidas Yeezy models there is no visible logo anywhere, so nothing on this shoe identifies it except the outline itself. Stone Grey works with that: one tone, no contrast trim, no distraction from shape.
