Origin
Designed by Kanye West and released on 25 November 2017 as part of the Yeezy Boost 350 line. This release has a primeknit upper in Grey/Bold Orange/Dark Solid Grey. Beluga is one of the names the label built its identity on, sitting alongside Pirate Black, Oxford Tan, Turtle Dove and Moonrock in the terrain and material palette. It also carries a specific weight in this line, because Beluga launched the Boost 350 V2 when the model arrived on 24 September 2016 and set the template of a grey knit cut by one bold contrast band. The 2.0 is the follow up, keeping the structure but shifting the accent so it reads warmer and less alarming than the original. That makes it the version people actually wore rather than stored. It is the colourway that explains why the 350 V2 became the most recognisable silhouette of the decade: one loud stripe on an otherwise quiet shoe.
Utility
The contrast band is the whole outfit's accent, so nothing else should compete. First recipe: plain black tapered trousers, a heavyweight grey tee, no other colour, letting the stripe be the single point of interest. Second recipe: mid wash denim with a clean hem, a white tee and a grey zip hoodie, a straightforward daytime fit that the band lifts. Beluga is the colourway that turned release day into a mainstream cultural event. Deliberately limited stock created the queues, the bot buying and the resale economy that the rest of the industry then copied, and GQ named these the most influential sneakers in 2016, the same year the V2 launched. The silhouette became visual shorthand for knowing what you were looking at. The story closed on 25 October 2022, when adidas terminated the partnership after Kanye West's antisemitic public remarks, which the company stated were unacceptable, hateful and dangerous and violated its values. Pairs like this now sit as remaining stock and resale rather than as a live line.
Construction
The upper is Primeknit, the one piece machine knitted construction that gives the 350 V2 its sock like fit with no traditional panels, and the contrast band is knitted into that same piece rather than stitched on, which is why it distorts slightly with the curve of the foot. Boost underneath is the expanded TPU pellet foam responsible for the bounce and the speckled surface that made this midsole recognisable on sight. No visible logo appears anywhere on the shoe, in line with the anti branding approach the line applied to nearly all its footwear. Practically this is the lightest feeling model in the family, low to the ground, close through the midfoot, and forgiving over long distances on hard city surfaces.
