Released on 27 February 2021 and part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has a suede upper in Blue Chill/Safety Orange/Black/White. The Dunk Low Pro SB is the skate specification of Nike's flat court shoe, and the Pro designation marks it as the performance version rather than the lifestyle one. Gulf is its motorsport-livery colourway, a pale sky blue set against a hot orange, a combination borrowed from racing paintwork rather than from any team or school. That is a telling choice for a brand founded by a track coach in Eugene, Oregon in 1964: Nike had spent decades translating athletics into colour, and the SB line was where it started translating everything else. Racing blue and orange on a skate shoe is a joke about speed made by people who move at walking pace.
Pale blue and orange is a summer pairing that wants simple clothes. Recipe one: light grey loose-fit jeans, a white tee and a navy zip-up, letting the orange Swoosh be the only warm thing in a cool palette. Recipe two: khaki wide-leg work trousers, a cream longsleeve and a blue chore jacket, which pulls the shoe's blue upward and leaves the orange as a single spark. SB Dunks fit true to size with a fuller footbed than standard Dunks. Protect the pale blue panels before wear because light blues absorb dirt fast, clean the orange separately to avoid colour transfer, and expect a skate build to crease early and honestly.
Nike SB is the division that had to earn its place instead of buying it, and it learned the hard way: its 2005 appropriation of Minor Threat's album art drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye and an apology from Nike. What survived that period is a line whose colourways are read as references rather than as products, decoded by people who know exactly where a livery came from. Gulf belongs to that literacy. It is a colourway that rewards recognising it, which is a very different relationship from the one Nike built with Air Jordans and Air Force 1s as they moved from courts into mainstream American youth dress.
The Pro SB build differs from a standard Dunk in the places skating destroys. Expect a fatter padded tongue, a more generously cushioned collar and an insole set up to absorb repeated landings, with panel layout and stitching arranged to survive contact with grip tape. The flat rubber cupsole is descended from Bowerman's original insistence that the outsole was the component worth reinventing, the waffle iron experiment that led to the 1972 Moon Shoe and the 1974 Waffle Trainer, and on a skate shoe that flatness is board feel rather than nostalgia. Gulf blue occupies the main panels with orange on the Swoosh and accents, so wear patterns show as contrast rather than as damage.
