Origin
Released on 24 November 2024 and part of the SL72 line. This release has a nylon upper in Cloud White/Core Black/Grey One. White, black and red on the SL72 RS is the classic sports palette used at its most economical, one base and two accents. The 72 in the name points at the year the Trefoil arrived: adidas designed that logo in 1971 and launched it for the 1972 Munich Olympics, and it went on to carry the entire company until 1997 before being handed to adidas Originals as the mark of heritage product. The RS designation marks this as a reworked version of the running silhouette rather than a straight reissue, rebuilt for pavement and daily wear rather than for a track. The result is a shoe that looks like a seventies race trainer and behaves like a modern everyday one. Style code JS0746 pins this exact colourway.
Utility
The white base with red and black accents repeats the most common sportswear palette, so build around it rather than against it. Wear it with straight leg blue denim and a plain white tee for the obvious one, or with grey track pants and a red or black crewneck to pull one accent forward deliberately. The slim seventies sole means low cushioning and a close feel to the ground, so it is right for a day of walking and wrong for a day standing on concrete. White fabric uppers grey quickly, so wipe them after each wear, and clean the midsole sidewall separately with a soft brush to keep the white sharper than the upper above it.
Influence
adidas has been in the Olympic story since before it was adidas. The Dassler brothers convinced Jesse Owens to wear their handmade spikes at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, which put their workshop in front of the world, and the Munich Games in 1972 were where the Trefoil made its public debut. The seventies running shoe carries all of that as visual shorthand now. It also carries the second, unplanned adidas story, the one where sports shoes stopped being equipment and became the base layer of European casual dressing, worn constantly by people who never ran a step in them.
Construction
Seventies running shoes were built thin and light, with a narrow sole, a slim heel and a fabric upper carrying overlays at the toe and heel where a runner wore through first. The SL72 RS keeps that visual grammar. In white with black and red, the overlays and the Three Stripes are all doing contrast work, so the panel layout is fully legible and the shoe reads busy from the side in a way a single colour pair does not. The Three Stripes began as reinforcement stitched onto the upper rather than as branding, and on a running silhouette that is the original context for them rather than a borrowed one.
