Culture Note™
Released on 12 December 2024 and part of On Running's Cloudmonster 2 line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/Black. The second generation Cloudmonster in Triple Black is the maximal shoe pretending to be a normal one. Everything about the Monster line is about scale, a sole built tall to deliver the sensation On was founded on, and blacking it out is the only way to make that scale socially quiet. The company behind it is fifteen years old and grew fast enough to look older: on the New York Stock Exchange since September 2021 under ONON, 2.32 billion Swiss francs of revenue in 2024, net profit up 204.5 percent to 242.3 million francs in the same year. The Monster is a large part of why, and the black version is the one that sells beyond running.
A blacked out maximal shoe needs an outfit with a clean vertical line. Recipe one: black joggers with a tapered leg, a black tee and a grey shacket, so the sole depth is the only shape in the look. Recipe two: dark selvedge denim stacked at the ankle with a navy sweatshirt, letting the shoe read as a solid base. Use them for long road runs, recovery days, city walking and travel, not for gym floors or lateral sport. Fit true to size with a wide forefoot and a locked heel, and use the top eyelets if you feel sway. Air them between wears, clear the pods weekly, and brush the midsole dry.
On's rise came through sport, from the 2012 Cloudracer raced by Swiss triathlete Nicola Spirig to the On Athletics Club coached by Dathan Ritzenhein, and its lifestyle audience came through Roger Federer's shareholding from November 2019 and The Roger in July 2020. The Cloudmonster sits at the intersection: a serious cushioned running shoe with a silhouette people buy on looks. It is also the shoe most often compared to Hoka, On's closest rival in the US performance running category. Triple Black is how you own that comparison without joining it, keeping the ride and dropping the announcement.
Hexagonal CloudTec pods load energy on impact and unleash it on take off. The mechanism is geometric: On engineers foam into specialised cavity shapes so the pods compress horizontally as well as vertically, absorbing landing forces and giving multi directional support instead of one plane of squash. That is what keeps a stack this tall from feeling unstable. In full black the sole reads as a single mass and the shoe looks visibly smaller than it measures, which is the practical appeal. The catch is invisible maintenance: deep pods trap stones and compacted grit that you will not see on a dark sole, so run a finger or a brush through them weekly.
