Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in White/Bicoastal. Nike Grind is the programme that recycles manufacturing scrap and worn shoes back into new product and into surfaces, and Next Nature is where that thinking becomes the shoe itself rather than a footnote about the factory. The Dunk Low is a smart place to run the experiment, because it is a silhouette with almost no technology to preserve: flat sole, panelled upper, big Swoosh. Bicoastal is a muted sage green with a grey cast, the sort of colour that reads as material rather than paint. It suits a build defined by what went into it. This is the Dunk asked to justify itself on inputs instead of on nostalgia.
Sage green with a grey cast is one of the easiest colours in the Dunk range to wear. Recipe one: ecru wide-leg chinos, a white tee, and an olive chore jacket, where three shades of muted green stack without matching. Recipe two: black jeans, a heather grey hoodie, and a black cap, letting the sage be the only softness in a hard palette. Dunks run long, so half a size down is usually right. Clean textile uppers with mild soap, a soft brush and cold water rather than leather cleaner, never machine wash, and air dry away from radiators, since heat is what warps foam and reclaimed synthetics fastest.
Nike's environmental story runs alongside its cultural one and is older than most people assume, with Nike Grind returning worn product into surfaces long before sustainability became a marketing category, and the 2021 partnership with Newlight Technologies on AirCarbon bioplastic pushing the same direction in materials. The company has also learned that its supply chain is a subject people will not let go of, from ongoing allegations and investigations it disputes to reporting it has had to answer publicly. Bicoastal is a colourway for a version of the Dunk that expects to be asked what it is made of, which is a very different conversation from the one team colours were built to have.
Next Nature builds use a high proportion of content by weight, which changes the hand feel of the upper: expect a matte, slightly fibrous synthetic and textile surface rather than the wet shine of full grain leather, with visible speckling in the foam parts where reclaimed material shows through. That speckle is the honest signature of the process, not a print. Underneath, the shoe keeps the standard flat rubber cupsole and low padded collar, so the ride is unchanged. Bicoastal sits across the overlays and Swoosh against a paler ground, which lets the texture read clearly in daylight. The trade for that texture is that it scuffs differently from leather and cleans more like fabric.
