Culture Note™
White is the colour the Roger line was born in, and the Advantage in white is the most literal version of the idea. The line exists because Roger Federer became a shareholder in On in November 2019 and then collaborated on The Roger, which launched as a limited edition in July 2020, moving a Swiss running company into lifestyle territory. That company was founded in 2010 in Zurich by Olivier Bernhard with David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti, built around a cushioning idea Bernhard tested with a garden hose after Nike passed on it. The Advantage takes that lineage and shapes it into a low, court derived silhouette, and a clean white finish is what makes the shape legible rather than technical.
White court shoes work when everything else is either sharper or softer than they are. Recipe one: cream chinos, a light blue shirt and a navy knit over the shoulders, a warm weather look where the shoe is the cleanest thing present. Recipe two: black tailored shorts, a white tee and a grey linen overshirt, letting the low profile keep it grown up. Right for summer city days, restaurants, offices with a relaxed code and travel, not for road mileage or real match play. Fit true to size with a close midfoot, and use a thin sock so the low collar sits properly. Clean immediately after any mark, use a white sole eraser on the midsole, and store them away from sunlight.
The Roger name is a collaboration between a shareholder and the brand he holds a stake in, which is a different relationship from an endorsement and produces a different kind of shoe. Around it On built a genuine tennis presence, signing Iga Swiatek, Ben Shelton and Joao Fonseca from March 2023 and Flavio Cobolli from June 2024, so the court reference is not decoration. Culturally On still reads as design object rather than street artefact, a Swiss engineered brand people wear because it looks engineered. A white Advantage is the intersection: tennis heritage as a shape, Swiss engineering as a sole, and none of it shouting.
A low court build changes the priorities: less stack, more ground feel, more emphasis on holding the foot in place. On's structural approach still runs underneath, with foam engineered into pod geometry that compresses horizontally and vertically rather than a soft slab doing all the work. In all white every panel line, stitch and sole edge is exposed, so this is the finish that tests a factory, and On's Swiss design standard shows up as low ornament and clean overlays. It is also the least forgiving colour to own. Treat the upper before first wear, keep a foam cleaner and a soft brush nearby, and accept that the sole edge will need attention roughly every few wears.
